NEW LEGEND: FUSE

https://preview.redd.it/ypsl6b8ydwe61.jpg?width=1456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c5c60f2e502092d319cc11b2a8f38357e19010b
Meet Fuse: a mercenary-turned-cage fighter who never turns down a good dust-up. His affinity for explosions allows him to carry extra grenades and to throw them faster and further. He can launch a cluster bomb with airburst explosives. And when it’s time to really bring the boom, Fuse uses “Wally” to launch a bombardment that encircles an area in a ring of flames.
Passive - Grenadier
Stack an extra grenade per inventory slot. Fire grenades farther, faster, and more accurately.
Tactical - Knuckle Cluster
Launch a cluster bomb that continuously expels airburst explosives on impact.
Ultimate - The Motherlode
Launch a bombardment that encircles a target area in a wall of flames.

NEW WEAPON: 30-30 REPEATER

https://preview.redd.it/rlwdckgzdwe61.jpg?width=1456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=86d16fc55be2eb2b8f3cd4f62a9775afb9d094e4
This heavy ammo lever-action repeater boasts hard-hitting rounds that’ll nail a fleeing Mirage at 200 paces.
The 30-30 is the benchmark for reliability, designed to withstand whipping sandstorms and temporal instability, which made it an obvious choice for the Apex Games.

DISCIPLINED TRIGGER FINGER

The 30-30 Repeater requires the user to rechamber their rounds between shots which brings a methodic rhythm to the rifle, an analogue elegance that the modern weapons of the Outlands just can’t quite capture.
To further tempt those itchy trigger fingers, the 30-30 Repeater has a built-in charge giving players an opportunity to deal increased damage with each shot at the cost of a short build-up.
The 30-30 reloads one round at a time, which makes for some very interesting resource management you won’t find anywhere else, even on the Mastiff.
The 30-30’s engagement range allows unique opportunities to reload individual rounds between shots. This gives the Repeater the ability to lay down consistent precision ranged pressure, something weapons with full reloads can sometimes struggle with.

KINGS CANYON MAP UPDATE

https://preview.redd.it/ulywhch0ewe61.jpg?width=1456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20f1a4c3024db83d43f1e6bde109559cc35f5b87
Season 8 once again sees changes to Kings Canyon. The main new point of interest shows the devastation from the ship crashing into the map. Players can now explore beyond Artillery, Spotted Lakes takes over the Slums and some new observation towers for basic recon or a sniper’s nest. Read more on the map changes in the map blog here.

LEGENDARY MAGAZINES

Season 8 introduces the Gold-tier magazines. Attaching it to a weapon automatically reloads your stowed weapons after a brief delay. The Gold magazine has the same capacity as Purple mags, and is available for Light, Heavy, Snipers, and Energy Weapons.

LEGEND META

Wraith:
Dev Note:
We know Wraith will always be a popular pick considering the amount of combat utility in her kit. After many tweaks to her abilities and animations, the fact remains that her win rate continues to be at the very top as it has since day one. With Season 7 hitbox adjustments to Pathfinder, we were able to control his power without nerfing his kit. We hope to do the same with Wraith.
Wraith now has a slightly larger hitbox than her fellow small legends, but the changes stay true to her model. As you can see in the before and after comparison, we’re adding some width mostly in the torso and leg areas:
https://preview.redd.it/oqlld516ewe61.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=68d3898817d50d8211039d76062194df486d2cd3
Even with these changes, Wraith remains small and hard to hit. She will retain Low Profile as we monitor her usage and win rates to see if power can be given back in other ways in the future.

Rampart:
Dev Note:
Rampart has remained at the bottom across our performance metrics since her release. Her kit is very much built around proactively setting up a powerful position, but in a game as fast-moving as Apex, we determined her walls should have some reactive power as well. We’re keeping a careful eye on this one.
Horizon:
Dev Note:
Horizon released strong, to the point where she rivals Wraith in win rate and pick rate. For the time being, we are monitoring her usage and checking whether or not the cooldown changes have a significant effect.
Octane:
Launch Pad Remastered: Many players may have known about Octane’s “super-jump” that was possible with a well-timed jump while hitting the pad. Once the double-jump option was introduced, there was an input clash that led to unreliable usage. We decided to add some launch options that are better defined than the old super-jump.
Crypto:
Loba:
Caustic:
Mirage:
Dev Note:
This change was mistakenly mentioned in the Fight Night patch notes when it was in fact coming with this patch. Mirage decoys will now have footstep audio in a limited capacity. There won’t be a footstep tornado if an enemy Mirage ults nearby, but it should be slightly harder to pick out the real Mirage from audio cues alone.

The Mastiff Legends season 8 patch notes

The Mastiff Legends season 8 patch notes
The latest season of Apex Legends introduces our most explosive Legend yet, a hard-hitting new gun, a world-shattering update to Kings Canyon, and a whole new batch of quality-of-life updates.
Season 8: Mayhem brings the boom starting February 2nd at 10am PT.
Read on for details.

NEW LEGEND: MASTIFF

https://preview.redd.it/bisvqn04wwe61.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=509f984d3fccdd6f060c693f4bf3a1054e5fe075
Meet Mastiff: a mercenary-turned-cage fighter who never turns down a good mastiff. His affinity for ease of use allows him to carry extra mastiffs and to throw them faster and further. He can launch a cluster mastiff with airburst explosives. And when it’s time to really bring the boom, Mastiff uses “Mastiff” to launch a mastiff that encircles an area in a ring of mastiffs.
Passive - Mastiff
Stack an extra mastiff per inventory slot. Fire mastiffs farther, faster, and more accurately.
Tactical - Cluster Mastiff
Launch a cluster mastiff that continuously expels airburst explosives on impact.
Ultimate - The Mothermastiff
Launch a mastiff that encircles a target area in a wall of mastiffs.

NEW WEAPON: 30-30 MASTIFF

This heavy ammo lever-action mastiff boasts hard-hitting rounds that’ll nail a fleeing Mirage at 200 paces.
The 30-30 is the benchmark for reliability, designed to withstand whipping sandstorms and temporal instability, which made it an obvious choice for the Apex Games.
DISCIPLINED TRIGGER FINGER
The 30-30 mastiff requires the user to rechamber their rounds between shots which brings a methodic rhythm to the rifle, an analogue elegance that the modern weapons of the Outlands just can’t quite capture.
To further tempt those itchy trigger fingers, the 30-30 mastiff has a built-in charge giving players an opportunity to deal increased damage with each shot at the cost of a short build-up.

NEW LOCATION: MASTIFF ZONE
Season 8 once again sees changes to Kings Canyon. The main new point of interest shows the devastation from the ship crashing into the map. Players can now explore beyond Artillery, Mastiffed Lakes over the Slums and some new Mastiff towers for basic recon or a sniper's nest.

LEGENDARY MAGAZINES

Season 8 introduces the Gold-tier magazines. Attaching it to a weapon automatically changes your weapon to a mastiff. That's it.

QUALITY OF LIFE UPDATES

DAMAGE COUNTER
  • We have now added a damage counter to the HUD. This Counter tracks all the damage you have done with your mastiff. This was a highly requested feature, so we’re excited to allow people easier tracking for chasing those badges and challenges!
Pinging mastiff
  • Pinging mastiff in your inventory displays your current ammo count along with "player wants mastiff ammo" in quick chat.

LEGEND META

Wraith:
  • Hitbox adjustments
Dev Note:
We know Wraith will always be a popular pick considering the amount of combat utility in her kit. After many tweaks to her abilities and animations, the fact remains that her win rate continues to be at the very top as it has since day one. With Season 7 adjustments to Pathfinder, we were able to control his power without nerfing his kit. We hope to do the same with Wraith.
Wraith now has mastiffs hitbox. As you can see in the before and after comparison, we’re adding some width mostly in the torso and leg areas:

https://preview.redd.it/03bcpmwfzwe61.png?width=316&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4eb95526ff7979aa8bfe564368154c9fe0706be
Even with these changes, Wraith remains small and hard to hit. She will retain Low Profile as we monitor her usage and win rates to see if power can be given back in other ways in the future.
Rampart:
  • Sheila angle increase from 120° to 720°
  • Minigun now shoots mastiff rounds that are also hit scan, to combat the high spread of mastiff.
Dev Note:
Rampart has remained at the bottom across our performance metrics since her release. We now realize that the reason to this was caused by the lack of mastiffs in her kit.
Horizon:
  • Gravity Lift effective cooldown increased from 21s to 25s. The 15s cooldown timer will now start when the Gravity Lift disappears.
  • While in gravity lift, mastiffs damage is now increased
Dev Note:
Horizon released strong, to the point where she rivals Wraith in win rate and pick rate. For the time being, we are monitoring her usage and checking whether or not the cooldown changes have a significant effect.
Crypto:
  • Added the ability to stick mastiffs to friendly drones
Loba:
  • Mastiffs inside unopened care packages are now visible with Eye for Quality and accessible through the Black Market Boutique.

    • Scout Rifle
    • Pulse Rifle
    • Submachine Gun
    • Hand Cannon
    • Machine Gun
Exotics

  • Powerful Cap: 1300
  • Pinnacle Cap: 1310
  • When below the Soft Cap, increased the upper limit of Power upgrades dropped from weekly powerful sources.
  • Increased XP rewards for the Last Wish raid to match Garden of Salvation and Deep Stone Crypt.
  • Fixed an issue where the Power preview for some vendor items did not match the Power of the gear received.
Player Identity
  • Several title Seals now support Gilded Titles. After completing the base Triumphs and claiming the Seal, several gilding Triumphs become available.
  • Completing all the gilding Triumphs changes the Title to its gilded state, represented by new color and icon in menus and player waypoints.
  • The Title only remains gilded through the remainder of the Season, as gilding Triumphs will be reset at the end of each Season.
  • This functionality exists for these Titles:
    • Gambit - Dredgen
    • Crucible - Unbroken
    • Nightfall - Conqueror
    • Trials - Flawless
  • New titles were made for Conqueror and Flawless that support gilding. The base Triumphs within these title Seals can be completed in any Season.
  • Players who have completed Triumphs associated with previous version of the Flawless or Conqueror Titles will have those completions applied to the new versions of the titles' Triumphs where applicable.
  • Triumphs to complete flawless carries in Trials no longer require the person being carried to never have gone flawless, and now require that they have not gone flawless during the current Season.
  • Fixed an issue where players could acquire more currency for acquiring fragments than there were fragments in the game.
  • Bounties and Pursuits
    • The Exo Stranger has a new Stasis Aspect quest available.
    • Requires Beyond Light ownership, campaign completion, and acquisition of all prior Stasis Aspects from the Stranger.
    • Reduced the completion values for many Stasis Fragment pursuit objectives to be less frustrating.

  • Season of the Worthy Eververse items have been added as potential drops in the Bright Engram.
  • Spider now sells Glacial Starwort and Spinfoil. Spider and the Gunsmith no longer accept Phaseglass Needle, Alkane Dust, Simulation Seed, or Seraphite.
  • Remaining Phaseglass Needle, Alkane Dust, Simulation Seed, or Seraphite can be turned into Spider for a small quantity of Glimmer.
  • Starter gear has been removed from Suraya.
  • Collections version of the Generalist Ghost Shell now has full Ghost mod and Masterwork functionality.
  • Riskrunner has been removed from Xur's vendor pool as it’s tied to a New Light quest.
  • Legendary Engrams can no longer be claimed from the Season Pass rewards when inventory and Postmaster are both full.
  • Wrathborn Hunt trail improved to better support colorblindness.
  • Fixed an issue where players could sometimes receive no reward from Dreaming City weekly bounties and Shattered Throne encounters.
  • Fixing this required the removal of very rare fixed-roll drops of the Dreaming City Scout Rifles and Sniper Rifles.

This game has a lot of problems.... Lets Discuss them!

This game has a lot of problems.... Lets Discuss them!
Introduction
I have a lot of problems with this game. Here's a list of them and how i'd fix them. Let's a go.
Locations & level design
One of the biggest problems this game has with it's locations, is that they treat their regions as tile sets rather than actual cohesive areas. Let me show you what I mean.
Destiny 2's Earth map
This is an image from Destiny 2 that shows the layout of it's earth map. Notice how the map has named locations and a clear layout of where exactly every area is. Now, Any mission that takes place on Earth in Destiny 2 takes place somewhere on this map. This gives the player a sense of direction and allows them to use their own knowledge of the map to get around quickly. Because everything on earth takes place on this one map, It allows the developers to hand craft it to a beautiful degree and fill it with easter eggs and secrets that players can find.
Now, Let's compare this to Avengers.
Utah Badlands
Every mission in a region takes place in it's own map seperate from every other mission in that region. This means that nearly every mission has its own unique map and layout (some use the same). Now you may be saying to yourself "Isn't that a good thing? nearly every mission has its own unique map!?". Except it's not a good thing, it's not a good thing at all.
Instead of Taking Destiny 2's approach and creating one well crafted region with recognizable landmarks, they instead made individual small maps by hand that all look the same and have no unique identity. This ends up making the locations feel like they were created by procedural generation. They didn't make Utah Badlands a unique region by giving it deep caverns, high rising cliff sides and unique areas with secrets. No, they made it a "unique" region by putting rocks everywhere and making it brown. Pacific northwest is "unique" because it has trees and everything is green. Eastern seaboard is a just a generic city that only feels "unique" because of how it takes place in a populated area.
The thing that irks me the most is that they're well able to craft unique and cool looking locations in this game.
Golden Acres in the Utah Badlands
The decomissoned helicarrier also in Utah Badlands
They create these cool landmarks and locations that are only ever used once in story mode. Instead of booting up missions with friends and going, "Oh cool, we have to go to golden acres for this mission!", instead we're going "Oh cool, this mission takes us to an aim lab! Just like that last mission...at least we get to look at rocks on the way there?".
Super duper amazing photoshop edits all done by me
This is a shitty mockup done by me to show just a rough example of what I would want from a region in Marvel's Avengers. The cool thing about having an all connected map means they could allow players to do something similar to Destiny called "Patrols". I'll get to this point in a different section.
Another quick obvious flaw with the locations is that they are not exactly "Marvel locations". Here's a quick list of locations that could be cool to visit.
  • Wakanda
  • Tokyo (if a ronin storyline ever happens)
  • Asgard
  • Sokovia
  • Sanctum Sanctorum (that leads into nightmarish / dreamlike areas)
  • A Kree Ship
  • Avengers tower (more so as a hub, but a mission where you take it back or get attacked like in "Age of Ultron" could be fun)
Loot & Gear
So gear kinda sucks in this game. It's a png with stats (that are usually bad) and they usually have uninspiring perks. It is not appealing to grind for loot in this game. However, there is a fundamental flaw with gear and stats in this game that I think in the long run make the combat even more repetitive than it already is.
List of Stats:
  • Might - Melee damage
  • Precision - Ranged damage
  • Proficiency- Crit chance / Perk chance
  • Valor - Heroic effectiveness / crit damage
  • Resolve - Max health / health recovery
  • Resilience - Armor
  • Intensity - stun + status meter damage/ Status resistance.
Now, I don't mind the game having in depth stats and breaking them up into small groups. However, the two main ones I have a problem with are "Might'' & "Precision".
Now, it makes sense why these two are both separate stats. It makes the ideas of builds sound more viable and entices the players to play the characters however they want. The problem with this is the fact that in most viable builds, players can really only choose one of the damage stats, which leads to the other being useless. This ends up limiting the usefulness of a character's combat kit.
https://preview.redd.it/vfq8qzsbhxg61.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6dacb510c767e8b6b5a78448d1622b955e5876fc
Let's take Iron man for example. I have invested a lot into precision, leaving might left behind in it's dust. This means I can only really use iron man's ranged weapons if I actually want to do damage, which isn't terrible as I wanted to make Iron man a ranged character anyway. However, I'm better off never using his melee combat, which means I can say goodbye to some of my skills.
bye bye to those melee skills!
At Least I still have my repulsors, Lasers and Rockets. Awesome!....But this is not entirely the case. If I really want to make a good character build, I'm gonna have to mess with my gear perks and the battery effect.
What is the battery effect? It's pretty much the idea of applying one status effect to any enemy (Cosmic, particle, Plasma) then attacking with the opposite (Gamma, shock, cryo). These status effects are found on gear in the ranged slot and melee slot.
example of status effect on gear for Captain America
Now unlike a game like Destiny 2, which also has different status types on its gear, The perks that give you status type damage only apply to certain combat moves, not all of them. In the picture above, it shows how my light combo finisher AND heavy power attacks deal cryo damage. This forces me as a player to spam these specific moves out over and over again to get my characters full damage potential. The funny thing about the gear I chose to show off as an example is that it's an "Exotic" piece of gear, the highest rarity of gear in the game. What's unique about some of the exoitc gear pieces is how some give you status type damage on two of your moves. Exotic gear is incredibly hard to find, nevermind a piece that has good stats and two status type damages as a perk. This means more often than not, your gear will only provide you with 1 way to provide status type damage, meaning players will often be spamming only 1 type of melee move and only 1 type of ranged move.
Let's bring this all back to my Iron man build. Let's say I get particle status type damage on my rockets. This means my rockets are the only really viable ranged move I have. Uh oh. This will force me into a repetitive combat loop where I will pretty much ignore all my moves except rockets.
Bye bye to pretty much everything
This will end up making arguably the best thing about Marvel's Avengers, it's combat, into a repetitive slog in the endgame. In some ways, the combat is actually more fun before you reach base power cap of 130 because you can use anything you want without worrying. So much love went into these characters skill sets yet all these restrictions put on them with gear just ruins it all.
I don't have thousands of hours invested into looter shooters like other people have, but I think I have some ideas to make it all more appealing.
  • First of all, turn might and precision stats into gear slot specific stats. What I mean by this, is that my melee and ranged gear slots should act more like weapons from Destiny or Borderlands. My melee attacks shouldn't rely on stats accumulated from all my gear pieces like Chest, utility, ranged or my artifacts. They should instead just rely on the gear piece in my melee slot. Same with ranged gear pieces.
  • Secondly, if a ranged or melee gear piece does status type damage, it should be applied to all my attacks and not specific ones. For example, If I'm iron man and I get a ranged gear piece that does Cryo status type damage, I should be able to do cryo damage with my Rockets, Repulsors and Lasers.
Ok, I want to quickly cover gear and their perks and why they suck. I feel as though the most exciting part of looter shooters is seeing what their new loot pick up does. Of course they're excited to see what kind of stats it has, but more often than not, they're excited to see what differentiates it from everything else. This usually occurs in the perks of gear. However, this is not the case for gear in Avengers.
Perks only start to get sort of interesting once you reach Exotic rarity gear. However, I say only "sort" of interesting, because the perks on the exotic gear are usually on the same level of perks you'd find on lower level gear in other looter games, such as Destiny 2. Making exciting gear in this game is probably harder than most looter games, due to it being a 3rd person action game rather than a shooter and it also has to deal with a lot of different characters. Personally, If I was Crystal dynamics, I would take the perks exclusive to exotic gear, and put it on legendary and epic gear. They should then re-work all exotic gear to be muuuuuch more exicitng. Here's a few dumb examples of perks
  • When Iron Man gets in Hulkbuster, his normal suit of armour is taken off of him and acts as an helpful ai for the team
  • Thor's ranged attack no longer throws mjolnir, but instead shoots lightning, causing bonus shock damage.
  • Everytime Kate teleports, she leaves behind a decoy that acts like her support skill decoy but is 50% weaker. Can only have 5 max decoys at one time.
etc. etc. You guys get my point. Before I move on from loot and gear, I'd like to make a short list of fixes for battling the rng of loot
  1. Re-rolls on gear
  2. certain Exotic's have a chance of dropping anywhere, specific exotics and higher chances of getting them exclusive to certain missions.
  3. I'm not a big fan of artifacts and exotic artifacts, but if they have to stay, at least make them usable by all characters
Traversal
Ok, I'mma make this one quick. Traversal is not great. I appreciate how they tried to give all the characters different ways of movement, but none of them feel exactly good. I feel as though if we ever get large connected maps and "patrol" mission types, movement being improved is a necessity. I don't know how to fix traversal, but I'll just give some examples
  • Certain ground characters like Cap, Black Panther and Bucky gotta run at this speed. They have to.
Dat boi fast
  • Hulk absolutely needs a charge jump like hulk Ultimate destruction
  • Flying characters need their speed increased
  • If we do get more open maps, Characters like black widow could possibly get vehicles?
  • When Spider-Man is introduced, the more open maps means he has a higher possibility of having a pretty good web slinging system. With the maps we have now though, and the way black widow swings off of poles with no momentum, it might not look too good.
  • Unrelated, but when/if falcon is released, we better be able to recreate that flying sequence through the canyon from "The Falcon and The Winter Soldier" trailer.
I feel as though having fast paced, good traversal is needed for the power fantasy of being a superhero. Let's hope they can come up with something good.
Mission types / variety
I feel as though the biggest complaint about Marvel's Avengers right now is lack of content. going through floors and floors of Aim labs and fighting 4 villains (If you include aim Mech's as villians) is very repetitive. I can only hope Crystal Dynamics know what they're doing to combat the repetitiveness. Here's a few fun notes I had.
  • Raid like content is needed. Increase the max player count and give players mechanics unique to that mission
  • Patrols from Destiny. I've mentioned these already, but it's pretty much free roam around a region with no specific mission. Allows you to explore, find secrets, take on bounties and just mess around. I feel as though if we get Bigger maps and an overhauled traversal system, this mode would be a fan favourite.
  • Horde - survival mode
  • Payload push mode
  • Seasonal events with unique spins on existing content with unique rewards, for example at halloween, horde mode could be based on marvel zombies, with a zombie cosmetic as a reward.
One thing I wanted to mention is solo player content. At the moment, it makes sense Crystal dynamics should focus on multiplayer content as that is lacking badly. However, I would like to see a return of single player only story missions.
When new characters like Dr. Strange is introduced, I'd love to see a single player only story mode where you play as Dr. Strange on your own trying to go up against a threat before you meet the avengers. If Crystal dynamics ever do focus on single player, story missions, here a few examples I think would be fun
  • Cap and Falcon infiltrating a hydra base
  • Thor returns to asgard alone where he faces Loki
  • Hawkeye / Ronin goes to tokyo to take on the yakuza
Monetization
This is a point that is moot to argue about, but I'll do it anyway.
I hate Microtransactions. I hate how there is a cosmetic store where outfits are being sold at $14 a piece. I feel as though in a game with superheroes as iconic as these, and with such iconic outfits, it feels terrible to have to pay for the outfits instead of earning them. If I was able to change this, I would do this:
Get rid of premium currency. Every 3 months, a battle pass is released for $20 with 150 tiers. All the rest of the new cosmetics are distributed through the cosmetic vendor, Patterns, seasonal events and certain mission rewards. Giving us a large battle pass is also another incentive to log on daily and gives the player a sense of progression.
Hell, If Crystal Dynamics gave us 2 years of good support, I wouldn't mind paying for big expansions from year 3 onwards.
Conclusion:
ok...this was a pretty long post. Now, throughout this whole post, all I did was complain. Complaining, complaining & more complaining, But I only wrote out this whole post because of how much I love this ip and how much faith I have in this game and Crystal Dynamics. I don't expect them to make all these changes, or even any of them, but I expect them to do better. Which I think they will.
I've been around this game since early 2017 when they showed the teaser trailer. I snooped around the orignal Reddit for this game when it was still known as the "Avengers project". I was here for every rumour, prediction, wishlist and "leak". I remeber when this one guy called "scirius" leaked how this game would be an ultimate alliance reboot and had something dumb like 70 playable characters and a hells kitchen expanison. ahhhh good times. I was here for the e3 2019 reveal backlash. I was here for the lack of information for months (good to see that never changed lol) and I was here for the launch. What i'm trying to say is, I'll be here till the end. Whether that end is a year from now or 10 years from now, I'll be here. Cause I can do this all day.
tl;dr: Fix Hulk’s hair pls

Kim Zolciak — Gambling addiction

It’s a Saturday night in lockdown London and I have nothing better to do other than research some tea on our Bravo housewives and rewatch classic reruns of the Real Housewives of Atlanta (season 3 is HISTORY).
Kim Zolciak became the subject of my research (well, more like digging) and I noticed she was consistently linked to rumours of having a gambling addiction. Unfortunately, the Daily Mail seemed to be the only other source which obtained a detailed amount of information, primarily from Don’t Be Tardy S08E03 ‘Nirvana, Nevada’ (I can’t believe this show has 8 seasons?). I was curious, so I streamed the episode.
When the Biermann family first arrived on an RV road trip to Las Vegas, their suite was luxurious and spacious. Kim quickly went on to mention she’d barely be in the room because she knew she wouldn’t sleep and instead, spend all night long in the casino. Well, she was right.
Long story short, Kim shows all signs of having a severe gambling addiction. She sacrificed 11 hours of sleep (and it didn’t seem like a sufficient amount of time for her) choosing to stay up all night (from an RV road trip with her family to Las Vegas) switching from the gaming machines, poker, cards — anything that was gambling. Brielle didn’t get any sleep either and kept Kim company all night. In the show, Kim was seen throwing $100 in the machines repeatedly.
Kroy had a strict curfew of their RV to departure LV at 08:00 to visit the Grand Canyon. It was 07:58 and Kim’s eyes were hypnotised by the slot machines and she was snappy to anyone (Kroy) that reminded her that they’d have to leave soon. Understandably, he was getting frustrated. She referred to gambling as her ‘therapy’ and a ‘slice of heaven’. Kroy said he doesn’t know any therapist that would recommend 11 hours spent on an activity. Sources are saying she has spent about $250,000 on gambling and is therefore likely to be crippling in debt. Kim reportedly then went onto purchase thousand dollar scratch cards.
The producers asked Kim’s younger children (sorry, I don’t know their names but they seemed maybe age 5 and 8?) if they knew what Kim was doing. Her child responded ‘yes, it’s where she goes to get money.’
At the end of the episode, the producers also asked if Kim managed to win big — or leave empty handed. She hesitated and then said neither, she’s more or less the same in terms of her financial status. Kroy snorted and then Kim looked away from the camera and drank from a red cup.
Side note: Brielle questioned if a rock formation within the canyon was a volcano, to which her mother responded, “Just be pretty, honey.”
TL:DR: Kim a history of a gambling addiction and this is evident on S08E03 Don’t Be Tardy. I watched, so you don’t have to. She’s fixated on gambling and spent 11 hours with Brielle doing it, it’s her main focus of the trip to Las Vegas. Her husband is finding difficulty controlling her habits and she cannot balance her family time and her gambling time. It seems as if she lost more than she won and reportedly has a debt of $250,000.
EDIT: thank you so much for the award! 🤗❤️

The Big Bend 100 - a Tale of Searing Heat and Frigid Cold

The Big Bend 100 - a Tale of Searing Heat and Frigid Cold
When: December 10th - 13th, 2020
Distance: 100 total miles, with an even split between the national and state parks. The route breaks down as such:
trail=49 mi
dirt road/4WD roads=29 mi
sandy arroyo=14 mi
off-trail route finding=5 mi
paved road=3 mi
Conditions: Highs in the mid 90s. Lows in the high 20s. Long exposed desert hiking, during a historically dry and hot year. That didn’t stop the desert from pounding me with rain on the first night. More on that later.
Lighterpack: https://lighterpack.com/capkvl
*There’s a TLDR and a gear review section towards the bottom of the post, if you don’t want to read this long winded chronicle about a hike I did. Here’s my instagram, if you wanna see small overviews of each day, with corresponding pictures.
Useful Pre-Trip Information:
I wrote a post over at ULTexas, where I go into considerable detail on the logistics of this thru-hike.
Day 1 - 30.22 Miles
“I love your jacket, where did you get it?”
“Oh, THANKS! It’s Lulu, of course!”
“I need to get the fuck out of the Basin”, I thought very quietly to myself.
Even with an early morning start, the famous Chisos Basin was already becoming crowded. As I was detaching my car key from its keychain, I eyed an old friend; the Nitecore Tube. At nine grams, it’s the definition of ultralight. It actually used to be my main torch before I switched it out for the NU 25, and rehomed it to my everyday carry. With only nine hours of sunlight available during the day, and a waning moon, I decided to chuck it into my ditty bag at the last second. A fateful decision, it would turn out.
I slung my Cutaway onto my back and set off. The Basin was practically teeming with life, and not just with suburbanites. Birds and squirrels danced from tree to tree, as herds of mule deer lazily grazed just off trail. As I started my descent into Blue Creek Canyon, I ran into a gentleman with a ULA pack. I may have tuned him into this sub, as he was finishing the Outer Mountain Loop and was interested in shedding a bit more weight off his back. If you’re reading this, how’s it going D? The line between ultralight and ultralight_jerk can be thin at times, huh? Can’t wait for your shakedown post: )
Blue Creek Canyon is a personal favorite of mine in Big Bend, its tall walls and gentle limestone spires loom over as you walk by. I hiked past Homer Wilson Ranch and paused a moment. Everything so far had been familiar territory, and I was about to venture into the unknown. The further you travel from the Basin, the less information there is about the route.
With the next step, I was on the road. Literally. It’s a three mile road walk to Chimneys, and a bit dicey at times. More than once I had to step off of the road and bushwack through deep thickets of thorns to avoid an upcoming Ford F-150 (it’s Texas, y’all). The temperature kept climbing as I baked on the asphalt, but the turn off finally came and I walked on to the Chimneys.
The Chimneys are a rock outcrop on a desert floor void of any other geographical features. The petroglyphs there are cool, and you can do some minor bouldering. I was more interested in shade though, as the temperature was hitting 87 degrees.
Why didn’t I brought my umbrella for this?
I swig of water later, and I was off again. I could have stayed there in the shade, but the BB100 is all about your water strategy. Especially true of a dry year, but there are hardly any reliable water sources in Big Bend. To remain stationary and drink water, is to shorten your supply of liquid gold without insuring your next source. I was happy I could easily put in the long miles between the few reliable sources of water there are out there. That was MY strategy at least.
Santa Elena Canyon drew closer as I made my way down Old Maverick Road. The popular Terlingua Abajo campsite came and went, and Terlingua Creek opened up as I rounded a corner. The word ‘creek’ doesn’t do it justice. This tributary of the Rio would be called a river in any other setting. It was MASSIVE. Ducks live there year round. In fact, its size created a bit of a problem.
How the hell am I supposed to cross this thing?
As I worked out where to cross the Terlingua Monster, I chugged water. I was so effin thirsty. My watch had read 93 degrees an hour earlier, but grey clouds had started to gather, and as the sun began to set, the temperature also began to fall. I was starting to worry I would have to set up camp and find a crossing in the morning. I scouted for about 20 minutes, all the while chugging water.
When was the last time I peed?
I was able to find a beaver dam of sorts, crossed the creek, and stepped into an oasis. After all my years of desert travel, I had never seen a true wild oasis, I realized. It was as loud as forest, with the sounds of living insects and birds. I barely made any ground as I stared around.
I felt great, even after a thirty mile day, so I decided to keep moving. As I stepped further from the creek, the oasis thinned, as did the trail. Eventually, there was nothing to follow at all. I picked an Eastern heading, and followed dry creek beds to the base of the Mesa de Aguilla. Light became dimmer and dimmer, and soon after the sun set, I reached for my NU 25.
Click. Nothing.
What?
Again, click. Nothing.
...WHAT? Fuuuuuuck.
It wouldn’t turn on. Just as I came to that realization, the dark clouds above began to sprinkle.
What the actually living fuck is happening right now?
In a split second, I made the decision to stop. I reached back and fumbled for my keychain light. A few seconds later, it was clipped to my hat and I had light. I pulled out my tarp, but the soft dirt in the area wouldn’t hold my stakes.
“No worries,” I thought, “I can use some rocks.”
Nope. All the rocks were as small as pebbles.
...seriously?
The rain began to pick up. In a last ditch effort, I pulled out all my quilt and mattress, set up a hasty camp, and wrapped myself in the tarp on the barren desert floor. As thunder boomed, I let out a steady rumble of inaudible expletives. It was going to be a long night.
Day 2 - 26.24 Miles
My alarm went off at 4 AM, but I hardly needed it. The DCF material of the tarp had worked as an amplifier of sorts, and I had gotten to intimately know each and every drop of rain as the course of the night went on. In fact, it was STILL raining. For the record, the forecast had called for a 30% chance of scattered showers before midnight... Not too long after my alarm went off though, it dissipated slightly, and I took the opportunity to break camp and hike.
Hey, my NU 25 is working!
The rain had turned the dry creek beds at the base of the Mesa into true arroyos, or dry sandy creek beds that are hard to travel on. Travel was indeed hard, but I was happy to not be confined to my DCF tomb, and was ecstatic that my headlamp worked again. Before long, the night began to give way to the light, and the rain stopped altogether. As I gained more light, a towering abyss of darkness materialized to the West. The Mesa I was about to climb was truly daunting.
The Mesa de Anguila is one of the least visited sections of the national park. Most visitors don’t even know about it. But to desert hikers, especially those that love to backpack in the Chihuahuan Desert, it’s steeped in rich legend and history. I was most excited and terrified about this section of the route, as I had never been up there.
I reached a low point in the limestone wall, and began to climb. It wasn’t too bad, but I could see this being a terrifying venture for some hikers. It’s a pretty exposed and steep climb. I would NOT attempt this in the dark, as had been my plan the night before. In the grand scheme of things, maybe the rain and headlamp malfunction had stopped me from doing something really stupid.
I finally crested the Mesa, and was floored. I had imagined it would be a flat barren limestone block, like off of a Wile E. Coyote cartoon. I’m writing this about four days after my trip ended, and I still don’t know how to describe it well. The fact of the matter was that I had climbed into a whole new world; a snowglobe within a snowglobe of sorts. Hills, draws, canyons, and ridges still existed up here. But it was just...different somehow. As if the landscape grew in defiance of a higher power. Maybe someone else can help me describe it.
Early on, there were signs of life. I crossed a dam, left over from the pioneer days of the area, and then hiked past some large deep caves. Cairns littered the brush, but they were hard to make out until you were right on top of them.
The route on the western half of the Mesa tethers you to the desert floor and the dry creek beds in the area, broiling you alive as the temperatures in Chihuahuan Desert climb. I only had a little over two liters of water left, and there were no tinajas available. Travel on the Mesa was also blistering slow. I tried my best to conserve precious water. I'd wait until I couldn't stand my dry throat, then savor every small swig I took.
When I began to feel lightheaded, I found a small crevice in a small cliff where I could be shielded from the sun's pale harsh rays. I took the opportunity to dry my gear from last night's storm. The temperature was reaching the high 80s. With a little food in me, the break worked well enough, and I was on the trail again.
The Mesa really tested my navigation skills, as well as my mental fortitude. I got lost A LOT out there. The trails were faint, and the geographic features inside of the Mesa were indistinguishable from one another, making navigation incredibly hard. At one point, I became mesmerized by a green flowery valley, and lost 20 minutes following the wrong set of cairns. Despite its challenges, I'd like to plan further expeditions into the Mesa. This place is wild, in every sense of the word.
As the afternoon continued, and I reached the western half of the Mesa, travel became easier. I picked up an old pack trail, grabbed a ridge, and made my way to Lajitas. As I descended, I could see the Rio Grande off in the distance.
Back on the desert floor, I hiked into town, and waved a hello to Clay Henry, the mayor of Lajitas. He also happens to be a very dapper looking goat. I refilled my water at the Barton Warnock Visitors Center. Unfortunately, it was late in the day and so I couldn't grab a backcountry permit for the state park.
Hmmmm. Well…I'll be passing the Sauceda Visitor Center tomorrow, so I’ll make it my business to get there before closing time, and square away my permits and fees.
I continued into the state park, as light rapidly fell from the face of various Chiuahuan mountain ranges. At which point, the wildlife began to come out, as only I’ve seen it do a few times at night. Crickets chirped. Squadrons of Javelina snuffed and rooted for sustenance, just off trail. Coyotes sung about the new possibilities the night could bring. Perhaps a fresh kill? All accented by small meteors dashing across the sky. While I passed through the desert in silence, like a ghost.
Day 3 - 24.66 Miles
My alarm went off at 6 AM, but I laid still for a long while, as I watched the tail end of the Geminid meteor shower. There were only one or two per minute, but as a city dweller most of my life, I may as well have been watching the movie “Armageddon”. The crescent moon and Venus eventually ended the bombastic celestial show, and pulled the sun from below the horizon.
Is this what camping is like?
I don’t think I’ve ever slowed down. Even in the default world, I'm running around at breakneck speeds. To finish assignments. To complete deadlines. To make a meeting. I think I’d like to slow down for a while, when I get back. Yea, I think I’d like that.
As I finally got going, my eyes caught the many things that I had missed during the night hike. The deep red of the desert mountains. The abundance of trees that live in the canyons of Big Bend Ranch State Park. The water seeping from the cliff sides. Better yet, the amount of water everywhere.
Why isn’t the state park more popular?
Yet still, I wouldn’t trade it for watching a meteor shower while hiking, or the sound of dozens of coyotes singing what I imagine were Christamas carols.
Part of my day involved a steady gain of elevation from Lajitas. The other part was walking through more water fed pools of life. The Banos de Madrid were particularly beautiful. I actually lost the trail for a few minutes, as I lost myself in exploration. Orchards of yellow trees lined Fresno and Chorro Canyons.
The climb continued, and eventually I reached an overlook where I could see the full length of the Banos. And then, that’s when I had a fateful encounter with a rock. As I made my way to the edge of the overlook, a rock which SEEMED to be able to bear my weight... could not. It slipped underneath two small rocks as soon as I stepped on it, and my leg got swallowed into the resulting hole. As I stopped, I pitched forward, slammed my shin into another rock, and the full contents of my front pocket careened forward and out to a rocky ledge just below.
My first thought was, “...OWWWW. WHAT THE FUUUUUCK?!?!?!?”
...As were my second, third, and fourth thoughts. After a half minute though, I was able to get my shit together. I pushed myself out of the hole to survey the damage. My leg was split open and gushing blood, but nothing besides my spirit was broken.
At least I’m hydrated enough to bleed.
I made my way down to the ledge and collected my things. What I didn’t know at the time was that my NU25 had also been launched into the desert, never to be seen again. I wouldn't come to realize this for quite some time.
Navigation was hard at times, after the Banos. The trails were crisscrossed by game trails, or had been eroded by wind and rain into extinction. After the Mexicano Overlook, the views became less frequent and I entered what I like to call “the microwave.” Meaning the trail takes you up and over a small hill, just to have you come down the other side and climb the next hill. In Big Bend, it also means the temperature picks up. It was SCORCHING in that microwave.
After a few hours of the microwave, I reached some dirt roads and made my way over to the Sauceda Visitor Center. I was greeted by the NICEST state park ranger I’ve ever had the pleasure of speaking to. However, she told me that they stopped writing permits for the BB100 recently and that I may not be allowed to continue my hike. She went into the back to check out an old email, and to speak with a supervisor on the phone. I only heard one end of the conversation, but it didn’t sound like it was going well for me. After fifteen minutes or so, she came back with a sheet of paper and a smile.
Holy Pmags, I’m IN!
The permit took a while to finish, and a crowd of about ten people started to form behind me. I knew I was losing precious daylight hours too, but I considered myself really lucky to get the chance to legally finish my hike. Permit in hand, I thanked the ranger profusely and made my way around the corner to refill on water, throw away trash, and repack all my gear.
The next person in line walked up to the ranger, and started to ask about car camping spots near the border of Big Bend National Park.
“Why don’t you ask that fella around the corner about the national park? He just came from over there. Took him about 70 miles to get here,” the ranger added.
“...He walked over here,” one man asked.
“Sure he did. He’s on a bit of a long walk actually, and has another 30 miles left. Should be done tomorrow, I think,” the ranger said.
That last bit of information sent the small crowd into a raucous. “Crazy,” one woman said. “That’s incredible.” one father said. A small smirk managed its way onto my face. I have to admit, in that moment, I felt kinda cool.
The moment passed quickly though, as it was in that moment I noticed my lack of a headlamp. After another short burst of creative expletives, I forced myself to take a series of deep breaths. There was nothing else that could be done about the situation. I slung my pack again, and briskly made some miles on the open road before entering my first arroyo. The next few miles would all be along these sandy creek beds that line the canyons in this area.
I was astounded by the views. The canyons held an abundance of beautiful trees, and the canyon walls themselves looked formidable and strong. There were signs of wildlife everywhere as well, and at one point, I rounded a corner and came face to face with a mighty bull with matching horns. The one and only time I’ve come across a bull in the wild, it bluff charged me before I was able to convince it that I wasn’t worth the hassle. This regal fella let me pass though, as it lazily munched on grass.
I passed some sizable tinajas, and slot canyons as well. In fact, sometimes the two features combined, and I would have to scrabble off to the side to find a pass, closer to the canyon wall. This was actually a lot of fun, but as the light in the canyon became golden behind the yellow trees, I knew my time was limited.
Eventually, the sunlight failed altogether and I had to reach back for my keychain light. I clipped it to my hat and adjudged the lumens so I could see the area right in front of my feet. It wasn’t that bad actually. This section of trail all takes place in these arroyos, so navigation was straight forward; just follow the canyon. I came to a small intersection, where I had the option to leave the arroyos for about a mile or two, or stay in the canyon and follow it to a small intermittent creek.
I chose to stay in the canyon so as to avoid potentially losing the trail on a barren ridgeline. Travel and navigation remained easy, but what I didn’t notice at the time was how the canyon was narrowing. Without my knowing, I was being funneled into tighter and tighter spaces.
I came across a small tinaja, and skirted it to the side. Down a small rock or two, and back onto level ground. The process repeated a few times, each time the tinaja becoming a little larger and deeper, and the steps became larger and steeper. Eventually, I came across a shallow but large tinaja. It was close to 10 PM, the temperatures were getting colder and colder, and if I wanted to cross this body of water I would have to get my feet wet. I looked at the map, and saw I was close to the intersection with the creek. I had another ten or fifteen minutes left in the canyon, so I decided to cross the tinaja. I took a small jump down, and as I reached the other side of the tinaja, I found myself boxed in all four sides.
…..fuck me, shit. I’m fucked.
The next ledge with level ground was about thirty feet below me. It held an even bigger and deeper tinaja. The canyon walls hugged me on each side. And without realizing it, where I had just jumped down had been a large wall as well.
I allowed myself to panic for thirty seconds, before forcing myself to calm down and brainstorm. My best option was the wall to my right. It was only about fifteen to twenty feet tall, and had a slight slope that ended in what seemed like a rocky ledge. It lacked any holes though, and only offered a rough surface for hand and foot holds.
I allowed myself another thirty seconds of panic before turning on my In-Reach, taking one deep breath, and scaling the wall. I was like a small arachnid crawling up a tremendous tree. I was not very graceful, I must admit. But I was fast, and after some spicy moments, I was able to pull myself up to the shallow ledge.
I let out a third string of creative expletives that echoed off the canyon walls and into the densely packed starlit night. The ledge dropped off to one side, but continued back along to the canyon to where I had just come from. I couldn’t continue forward, but I felt lucky enough to make it out of the canyon in one piece to not really care all that much. After one or two more spicy spots, I found my way out of the arroyo and onto actual trail.
I’m really surprised I could follow the faint trail, but my senses were probably dialed up to eleven after Spiderman-ing my way out of that slot canyon. That little flashlight was working overtime. I met up with Terrenos Creek, whose creekbed was both dry and wet at times. After a few more miles, I found a small nook that was protected by an overhanging tree branch. I was mentally beat, so I took the out and made a hasty camp for the night.
Day 4 - 17.29 Miles
Truth be told, there wasn’t supposed to be a Day 4. I had expected to finish around 3 AM and crash at the Western Terminus until a friend picked me up at noon. But as you can see, loads of unplanned stuff happened, and I still had a handful of miles to go. Lucky for me though, my legs were good for it.
I swung my pack on one last time, turned on some “Daddy Issues” and “Descendants,” and crushed some miles. By the time the sun came up, I was peddling my way out of the arroyos and onto discombobulated jeep trails.
I gained elevation pretty quickly, and as I did, the wind whipped me left to right and back to the left. A cold front must have come through during the night. “Oh well,” I thought, as I continued to move forward.
The last cool thing I saw on this trip was a family of fat javelinas walking on a ridge above mine. These guys were HUMONGOUS. Very rarely have I seen a wild hog in the daylight too, but who the hell would want to mess with these guys?
Noon came and went, but I was still a mile or two out.
Fuck.
I kept on chugging, this time dialing up my speed. I finally crested the last big hill on the trail and saw my friend's truck, followed by a large cloud of dirt. I took off at a sprint. I was late, and was afraid they’d leave if they didn’t see me at the trailhead. You see, this “trailhead” is nothing more than a speck of dirt on a long windy road in the middle of nowhere. She could easily miss it and keep driving into Mexico.
Luckily, she stopped. I could see her as she stepped out of the truck, and I waved at her with my trekking pole. She waved back(!), prompting me to slow down to a walk, and then a crawl. I was spent. I was able to make it across the finish line, but collapsed onto her truck the moment I didn’t have to bear my own weight anymore.
It’s over. I can drink all the water I want.
TLDR: Desert hiker is humbled by the Big Bend area, but sees some cool shit along the way.
Lightning Round Gear Review:
Gryphon Gear Aries 30 - the desert is an intimidating place in winter. Just look at the temperature swings I expereneed. Highs in the mid 90s, which drained and dehydrated me, with lows in the high 20s, which gave me numb fingers after a few minutes of hiking with bare hands. Weather in general is very volatile in the desert, just take a look at my GRT trip report. Hell, it rained the first four days of my NOBO PCT attempt. I wanted a quilt I knew could handle that challenge, and after MONTHS of debate, I decided the Aries 30 would ensure a comfortable trip. You can read more about the specs here, and how it stacks against a more familiar quilt, but after this trip, I believe this quilt can face any challenge, with toasty draft-free nights. At times, it was almost too much quilt. But that’s a far better problem to have, then the quilt not being warm enough. Quilts are easy to vent anyway.
Uberlite - The short version, more specifically. This was the first time in years that I tried my hand at a 20 inch wide inflatable pad. I like to use CCF, and only occasionally use inflatables. When I do, they tend to be wider. But I didn’t mind the width at all, especially when I slept on my sides. I wouldn't trust it to survive the desert by itself, so I paired it with my ⅛” Thinlight. That combo really worked well on this trip.
Uncrustables - a month ago, in the Weekly Thread, I mentioned that these are my go-to breakfast and dinners. I still think they’re fine, but on trips or ressupplies longer than four days, I think I’d like to supplement these with homemade wraps or jerky. I noticed on my last day that they had become drier and less flavorful, the longer they stayed out of the freezer. Especially the ones that were crushed inside my pack.Proceed with caution.
NU 25 - I just bought a replacement for the one I lost on this trip. Some of you may be thinking, "woah, I wouldn’t trust that headlamp after it gave you soon much trouble." But you have to realize that I used this headlamp for almost three years. Not just on backpacking trips, but on early morning trail runs. So multiple times a week, every week, sometimes for hours on end. Sure it acted a little funny on my first night of this trip, but after that much abuse, it was bound to start acting weird eventually. Maybe it was even serendipitous to lose it on that overlook, on my third day. I still think it’s a great headlamp.
Nitecore Tube - If there were an MVP for this trip, it would be this little guy. What a clutch decision to bring it along at the last second. It saved my ass, TWICE, while I was out there. If you don’t really plan to do much night hiking, or want to have a go at a XUL set up, I’d take a hard look at this affordable torch. Especially with this mod to clip it to your hat. It overperformed, given its weight.
Training - After my trip to the Winds this past summer, I realized that I was in decent shape, but my aerobic capacity was somewhat lacking. I spent the next four months focusing my training to become more aerobically fit, while maintaining muscle strength. It’s been a fun change, and this was my first ambitious multi-day trip since the Winds. I can say that I never became tired physically. Even the hardest parts of this trip were not that challenging to me, and this is a brutally unforgiving trail. What did give way were my mental facilities. I made more navigational errors, the longer the day went, and the longer I was out there. I think mental fitness is the next form of training I need to embark on.
Senchi Fleece - Made of 4409 Polartec Alpha, this is the lighter airy version of the two fleeces the company makes. I’ve owned this since April 2020, but didn’t start using it until August. After about 300 miles, and about eight days and nights of trail use, I feel confident in saying that it fits my hiking style well. Hike all day, with late nights and early mornings possible. On this trip specifically, I’d wear it at night while setting up camp. Usually with my rain jacket on top. Then wear it to sleep by itself. On the last morning, when the temps stayed in the 30s well after 9 AM, and the wind chapped the parts of my face not covered by hair, I kept my rain jacket over it. For similar hikers, this is a good three season piece that could replace a traditional mid layer. Durability hasn’t been an issue for me, during on-trail and off--trail excursions. This stuff was made for Operators, I doubt that it’ll meet its match on groomed trails.
With all that positive stuff said, let me level with you. I think yall need to chill. It’s a fleece. Any fleece would suit a similar hiker. The fleece in your closet right now, whether it be the P97, the ON Go-Warm, the Macpac Nitro, the R1, ….the Palante Grid Fleece, the Montane Allez, the Arcteryx Delta...I can do this all day…the Rab Nucleus, the Haglof LIM, the Melly, ect...all of these would fit that same bill. Put your credit card away, close down reddit, and go on a backpacking trip.
Or maybe just plan one on Caltopo. Five of you messaged me the weekend before I set off for this trip. I’m not sure what made yall pop at the same time, but please just go enjoy the outdoors with what you have. I’m very happy for the success of Senchi, but I sometimes wish this sub wasn’t so gear oriented.
I hope you don’t read the above paragraph as a “do not disturb” sign. In fact, I really enjoy talking to y’all on a one on one basis. I spent three hours this past summer, helping someone plan their WRHR trip. In real life, I helped my friend beat my GRT FKT record by shuttling them to the Eastern Terminus, and spent the 24 hours prior with them discussing the trail in great detail. I’m more than happy to discuss why a piece of gear worked or didn’t work on a specific trip, why and how I use my gear, or to help you plan your own gnarly adventures. But I find it really boring when I’m used as a point of confirmation bias, or as a justification for you to buy a new piece of gear you don’t need. Idk. I’ll probably be crucified for saying so. Oh well, I’m gonna go plan my next trip.
Future trips - I've done some really ambitious trips this year. Even my day hikes have been arduous expeditions into the unknown and dangerous. I’d like to go on some easier trips next year. Like an overnighter to a nice lake, where I drink hot cocoa or something. I’ve never done anything like that. I’m serious, I don't know how to relax. I’m too competitive for my own good, and would like to slow things down for a change.

LCK 2021 Teams Preview by Cloudtemplar

In about 15 hours the first round of LCK will start on 1/13
Translated from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93Ojnk3WCJc&t=3812s
CT = Cloudtemplar LCK color caster former pro player
Pony = Pony CK caster and also Korean LPL caster

Kespa Cup:

CT: So we predicted Damwon to win the tournament and I think we can say that they won by a bigger margin than we thought.

Pony: Kespa is really a place where we gauge the "feel" of the team. Like how we expect HLE to play around Chovy which they did. And aside from AF under performing the teams performed as we kind of predicted.
CT: So when we talk about strong teams in LCK the consensus is that DWG> T1, GenG, and DRX(used to). In this tournament the key players of T1 and GenG didn't play so there isn't any one to contest Damwon.

Hanwha Life Esports(HLE)

CT: So a team that have been getting a lot of expectation and attention is HLE.

Pony: So HLE I don't have a lot of doubt against Chovy or Deft or even Vista. But to compete against Damwon their jungle and to be honest nobody else can really compete against Canyon. So the result was quite unsurprising.

CT: We will go more indepth later when we talk about individual teams but for now I think.... Clid was the best jungler(aside from Canyon) in this tournament??? He did do some questionable things but overall I think he was the best???

CT: Let's talk a bit Damwon before we move on. Damwon have been doing really well and improving in a solid trajectory for about a year now. Khan performed... a bit better than we expected? But to be fair no one can really replace Nurguri right now.

Kespa Highlight:

-CT: So every year people always wonder what is the point of Kespa cup. It is simultaneously important and unimportant.

-Pony: So this is similar to Demacia cup where the point of the tournament is to really have games played. You don't really need to think too deep about this because having a few games played before Spring is better than going in dry.

-CT: For other region these types of games(IEM, Dreamhack?) it is more of a place for casual competition and a place to give new players experience while testing them. This is however not the vibe of Kespa cup historically. People want the teams to go full competitive mode in Kespa.

-CT: This has been stressful for teams in the past. Teams who have just finish playing in Worlds have to come back and prepare for Kespa. And even if you do well at Worlds if you do bad in Kespa people would overreact and well overreact. But I think that competitive attitude changed during this Kespa Cup where teams are going with their own pace.

Highlight Player in Kespa

-Bay(NongShim RedForce):

Pony: Although there were some matches Bay didn't do well I thought he did a good job considering he is a rookie.

CT: Considering that he played against Showmaker in his first game he did well aside from that game. There are a lot of players that mental boomed after facing a huge obstacle in their first game but there are also players that learn a lot from it.

---End of Kespa Cup---

1. DWG KIA(DWG)

CT: So there are a lot of question for the team going in especially their new top laner: Khan. But overall they will be- they are a strong team. I often evaluate a team's strength based on how they fare against their opponent and although I think they are a bit weaker than their former iteration I still think they are a strong team. Khan is a question mark and need more games to see but other four player are still really solid.

Khan?

Pony: The reason why we said we need more time for Khan is because other four players are so strong Khan was barely in dangecontested. The only game where Khan was contested was when he went against Kiin(AF). We really haven't seen a game where Khan have to carry or when Khan is the win condition of the team.

CT: To add to that yes he was good on tank champion and yes he was good on carry champion like Akali but because other four members are so strong it is hard to say whether they won because of Khan or if it mattered at all. I feel sorry to say this but other teams in Kespa was... quite weak. Other teams couldn't really contest Damwon.

CT: And we are all talking about Khan but Chasy is also a very mechanical player that started as a mid laner so we might see him instead. No one know what will happen in a year so don't just look at Khan.

Canyon

CT: I have been trying to say this but never had the chance but... In LCK there is no rival to Canyon. And to be honest it's been like this for a while. While in other roles there is a clear 2nd place there is really only a clear third place in Jungle with no one quite sure who is 2nd place.

CT: And it is not just Canyon other members are also still really solid.

2. DRX

CT: So this is essentially a new team. There are some old faces in coaching and player squad but this is really a new team. So it is inevitable that they are weaker since they are a new team.

Pyosik

-CT: So some people who has been following LCK for a while might recognize some name but most people probably only recognize Pyosik.

Pony: I think short term wise if they want to have good result they have to play around Kingen and Pyosik since they are the ones with the most experience.

CT: I don't think people should expect the new rookies to become the best in their role in their first game or something. It is no longer possible for newcomers to become best in their role in their first game. It is a unrealistic expectation and they need time to grow.

CT: I also don't think it is realistic to expect Pyosik to be able to solo carry the team. A lot of people don't understand but Jungle does not exist independently from lanes. Just like how laner need Jungler, Jungler also need laner.

CT: Let me break it down in simply math. Topside or botside which is more important? There are three people topside so topside is more important. Which lane is the most important? Botlane because there are two people. If you include jungler in midlane then I would say it is mid/jungle. Jungler or Laner, which is more important? There are four laners and one jungler so Laners are more important.

3. Gen.G

CT: So every starter in GenG stayed and although there is some coaching changes it is basically the same team. Some new players joined but GenG already had a solid roster so I don't think they see too much play.

CT: A lot of people disagree with me but I don't believe in a ten-men roster or even a huge roster. I think it just split practice time and people spend more time figuring out which lineup is better than trying to improve the team itself.

CT: I think GenG have a solid roster but they does have a bad reputation. I think this is a very unfortunate for GenG because while they are a solid team they lose in the most painful way possible which make them look worse than what they actually are.

4. Afreeca Freecs

CT: So before Kespa cup there was some hype over the team due to coaching changes and new star players but the disappointing result in Kespa cup kind of stopped the hype. Of course we shouldn't take Kespa cup too seriously but that's what happened.

CT: Afreeca is a team I really don't want to talk about because we have been saying the same things for years now but this year AF actually look worse. AF is a team that... people call the playoff gatekeeper that win against lower half team but struggle against top teams.

CT: The reason why I think this year is worse for AF is because last Kepsa Cup Kiin super carried the whole tournament and won AF the cup. But ever since that peak Kiin have been slowly under performing.

Pony: This is not just Kiin other star player in other region who have been doing well also tend to fall off after a certain point. This is normal since they are human.

CT: I hope people don't blame Kiin because when he was at his peak if his teammate are back him up he might have been be able to win. But Kiin are starting to be... average? I think AF are really nervous right now since the team was all about Kiin now Fly, Dread, Bang they all have to step up.

Pony: I think right now Jungle is their question mark. I personally think Fly will do well in Spring but Dread will be vital.

CT: I really just want to see the Afreeca we saw when they faced T1. The Peak Afreeca... unfortunately we never saw that team ever again...

5. T1

CT: I don't think I need to say this but T1 is a strong team. When we think about strong teams in LCK it is Damwon, GenG, T1. DRX used to be there too but since they are a new team now and people are saying HLE are next.

CT: To be honest I don't T1 have ever been rated badly. It has always been a solid team. There are times where they underperform but for predictions they are always favored.

Pony: When I see T1's lineup I feel like I am in Starbucks like every player look so good.

CT: Usually in LOL history players that are not starter doesn't get much attention. But even the substitute players in T1 gets a lot of attention. A lot of it has to do with the brand recognition of T1 but also their performance in SoloQ and Academy. They have so many good players we are not even sure who is going to play.

Pony: So we briefly talked about this before of how team should stick to one roster but I don't think T1 feel worried. Because all of their players are so good they have way more options than any other teams. We said this before but Spring split is really just a split to train your player so they have time to pick and choose. I think Spring is great for players to fight for their spot.

CT: Yeah I agree it would be a different story if they have the same lineup at summer split. Like if they have a huge lineup before an important match(cough cough) then I don't think it would be good.

Mid

CT: There is a lot of things to talk about T1 but if I have to pick one is have to be the mid lane. I mean mid laner will decide the direction T1 will go and although we expect Faker to play Clozer also performed well so...

Pony: When I talk about the games where Faker didn't do well it is not really his mechanic at fault. It is mostly champion pick, when he have to help other lane giving up his lead, or just Macro mistakes. I think he needs to be able to concentrate on his role as a mid laner and not have to deal with other issues like having to help top/bot.

6. KT Rolster(KT)

CT: KT performed above our expectation at Kespa cup. I think Doran was the one that really broke everyone's expectation. I guess he can be called a underrated player although he went to Worlds and are top 3 in LCK people often forgot about him.

CT: I think the lineup is quite solid. Look at mid you have a dice roll player like Ucal and a consistent player like Dove. They match each other quite well. I think the biggest strength of a Six-man roster is being able to have two player with different playstyle(color) in a team. It doesn't really help if both player have the same playstyle.

Hybrid

CT: So to fill in the gap of Aiming Hybrid is added. I don't think Hybrid is outstanding(90) I think it is hard to fill in Aiming's shoe but I think he is not bad.

Pony: I think if you only look at ADC and the loss of Aiming you can say it is a loss but because of Zzus I think overall as a bot duo they are a 90. I think they are better if you think bot as a duo.

CT: I think we have to see. Because although Hybrid did really well he also underperformed for a while. Zzus also did really well in Challenger(Academy) but we still have to see.

Doran

CT: I think Doran have to do what Canna did in T1. What Canna did in T1 is when his team is struggling he is able to make plays and give his team time to get back to form. I think Doran can carry the team while his team are growing. And when the whole team are ready they can be a strong team. I don't think this KT is weaker than the previous KT.

Pony: Yeah I think this team is doable.

CT: Of course we are saying this because of Kespa cup which we said before doesn't have much meaning. It is kind of funny that we try to avoid basing our analysis on Kespa but at the same time we can't really ignore it.
CT: When he lost to Rookie I think he lost something important. Ucal is still really young, younger than Canna so I think there is still time for him to take back what he lost at that match.

CT: Anyway I would give KT a 'dark horse' stamp. This team might catch us out of surprise.

7. Liiv Sandbox

Pony: I think everyone knows this but Summit is really strong in laning phase but unfortuately the game doesn't end after laning phase.

Pony: After laning phase he kinds of play like... a cat. He does things that doesn't quite make sense.

Pony: Croco is also a notable player. I talked to the coach afterward and he said that when Croco does a super play he would shout "I CAN DO THIS" while he does it. He have confidence in his mechanic.

CT: I think a lot of people like Croco because he is a mechanical player and make great play. I think Sandbox need more players like this. One of my criticism against Sandbox is that their players are too ordinary and they really need more colorful players.

Botside

Pony: I think a big question mark is on adc. I don't think Route or Leo standout and it is a bit difficult to say which player are better.

CT: Effort are unfortunately known for making big mistakes at crucial matches. We all know this but not all matches are equal. It is better to under perform the split then to under perform in crucial matches. This might be what Sandbox need. When Effort is on form he standout but when he doesn't he also standout. I don't think he is a dice roll player but something similar?

8. Nongshim RedForce

CT: So Nongshim have been coming in... hot recently. I think when Nongshim joined a lot of people are excited and hyped for the new sponsor. I think everyone who live in Korea knows Nongshim.

CT: Going back to the game Nongshim did pretty well at Kespa. Peanut is still good and botlane performed surprisingly well.

Pony: I think Bay did really well considering he is a rookie.

CT: You know when pro players retire and especially those who were very confident in themselves but wasn't able to succeed. When we have interview they always mention that mid laners in LCK are stronger than they expected. I mean the mid laners that looks strong are expectedly strong but even those who look weak and breakable are actually really strong. They would look at the games and think "Ah I can win against him" but then when they play they realize that is not true.

CT: Competitive scene gathers the best of the best and on top of that LCK is one of the most competitive region of them all. So the players there and especially those who was able to stay there for years are monsters that would destroy you if you leave your weak spot open.

Pony: So I am bit worried about Bay because although he did well if you include jungle they have things to overcome.

9. Hanwha Life Esport(HLE)

CT: So coming from preseason HLE has been the team that are getting the most hype from the roster changes.

Pony: I am actually interested on which top lane they decide to choose. Dudu performed quite well and has potential but Morgan also had a quite nice year in LPL. If Morgan could maintain his consistency while being able to play carry champion then the team might have a chance.

Pony: However the jungle is a big question mark.

CT: Also Deft who haven't show the dominance we expect recently. It seems that Chovy might have to once again wear many hats.

CT: This is kind of funny but during Kespa we kept talking about Chovy's cs. We keep talking about Chovy's cs. People tell us to stop talking about Chovy's cs but then there is really nothing to talk about. HLE's performance was so bad it was the only thing we could talk about. At the same time Chovy was insane on his ability to gain a cs lead.

CT: There is such a high expectation on Chovy that people blaming Chovy saying that they lost because Chovy was too fixated on cs. It is kind of similar to Kiin in AF where people expect them to 1v9 hard carry the team. People come watch the game expecting Chovy to do so and becaues we talk about cs all day they think cs is the reason they lost.

CT: This is the weight of a superstar. A superstar is always the focal point of the match. There are a lot of attention ,negative and positive, and superstar have to meet that expectation.

Pony: I thought Chovy did well individually in those games. Even Showmaker in his interview said he was impressed by Chovy. I think we have to see how the team play around Chovy.

Pony: So a lot of people are saying that Deft look weak because of Vsta. But I see it as more of Deft telling Vsta to play comfortably in his own playstyle.

CT: And this Deft talk was there last year too when Deft and Keria underperform. The level of expectation on Chovy is also the same expectation we have on Deft. Deft is also a superstar. It is true that Deft's form fall off a bit recently.

CT: I have the same prediction as I had on DRX with the same reasoning. Last time I looked at DRX having Deft and Chovy and thought how can't they not go to playoff. But I did think the same with VipeLehends and that didn't quite worked out. Maybe because they are botlane? Sometime League is like a gacha game the more S player you have the more likely you will win.

CT: Anyway we have high expectation on HLE

10. Fredit Brion(BRO)

CT: So Fredit Brion formerly known as Brion Blade, is the last team of LCK. Because they forfeited during Kespa Cup we really don't know much about it.

CT: I think the most famous member of BRO is their coach. Edgar who is formerly the head coach of GenG. Then it is probably Umti and Lava that people would recognize. To be honest it is kind of hard to praise this team.

CT: So previously I said that Laner>Jungler I also think that Player>Coach. That's another discussion, so for now let's just talk about the player roster. There are some players from LCK Challenger(Academy) and some pro players that used to play in LCK. But for those who used to play in LCK they didn't show a great performance when they played so...

Pony: I think one player to pay attention to is Hoya who has been doing really well in LCK Challenger. When we casted Challenger we used to praise Hoya a lot. I think if Umti can do what Peanut do then in the most optimistic world it could work.

CT: I think long time ago when Lava was on HLE there was a period of time when he did quite well.

Pony: yeah it was kind of funny because he would also perform well after he take a break. Then he will underperform then he take a break then he will do well and etc.

CT: Yeah when Lava did well he was the star player(ACE) of the team. He was the one carrying the team but he starts to fall off. It was to a point when he couldn't even surive laning phase. I think we can still believe in him. He has to prove himself.

CT: As for the rest of the team they are all unknown so there is not much to talk about. I think they could be better at the end but I think this team will struggle a lot.

Prediction for Playoff

CT: So just basing on what we know right now I think the teams that will go to playoff is:

1: Damwon,
2,3: T1, GenG
4: HLE(Pony agrees a little)

After that there is still two slot left. Then I think its where the darkhorse come in.
5,6. KT, NongShim.
7,8,9. Sandbox, DRX, AF
10: BRO
